My Cars: 1971 Plymouth Road Runner

Introduction

Post by unionjack1940 » Sat Sep 14, 2013 3:53 pm

Hey everyone, I apologize if I posted this in the wrong forum, but I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Roland and I am the proud owner of a 1971 Road Runner, my dream car since I was little. I was first inspired by Richard Petty, since I'm a huge NASCAR fan and when I learned he drove one countless victories during the '71 season, I knew that was the car to own. Besides, it is, in my opinion, the sweetest looking ride besides the '68/'69 Barracuda and the '70 Superbird. But anyway, I found this forum after a friend told me about it, so I'm here. I'm a younger MOPAR enthusiast, so I may have some technical questions here and there about things, so be patient with me. My dream is to fully restore my car once I'm retired from the Navy and have it looking like it did when it left St. Louis. Thanks for reading and hope to interact with you all in the future. God Bless!

Thanks for the comments. Well, I finished the interior last summer, but I had to hold off anymore upgrades due to some student loans that have to be paid back. Despite its decent appearance, far from show car quality like that of the famed auctions, the RR has won me two show trophies which are displayed in my little workshop. The car's fender tag reads:
26 26” Radiator
END End of Sales Code
C16 Console w/ Woodgrain Panel
C55 Bucket Seats
J52 Inside Hood Release
M21 Roof Drip Rail Moldings
N41 Dual Exhaust
V21 Performance Hood Treatment
GF7 Dark Green Metallic Exterior
U Built to Specifications for USA Order
A35 Trailer Towing Package
A87 Road Runner Décor Package
B41 Front Disc Brakes w/ Standard 10” RR Drum
B51 Power Brakes
GF7 Dark Green Metallic Top Color
M6F7 Trim Opt. Décor Group , Vinyl Bucket Seats Dark Green Metallic
GF7 Dark Green Metallic Poly Int. Door Frames
C15 Special Sound Insulation Package/ Date Built: 12/15/70
149421
E65 383 cid 4 Barrel V8 300 HP Roadrunner/Superbee
D32 Heavy Duty 727 TorqueFlite Automatic Transmission

A unique feature on this car is the absence of a radio, often cited as a "radio delete" car, but since radio was an option, I guess you can call it a standard RR. Neat little factory plug where the antenna would be in the right front fender as well as a solid faux woodgrain rallye instrument panel. The car does not have A/C either. It has been through one paint job which is starting to fade a bit, so when the time and finances come, I'll sand it down and primer it up followed by a sweet, paint job of the original F7 green that should be gracing the car. Standard 383 cid RR engine, however it is not the original block. The story from the previous owner is that is was an Iowa drag car, which makes sense since it was built in St. Louis, MO. So, a suped up 383 is in its place rated at 330 HP + 15-20?? HP from the long neck Hooker headers I installed last fall. Other than that, the car has had a healthy balance of storage in the winter months and driving most of the year whenever I come home. Wherever I end up stationed/based is where my RR will call home. By the way, a really cool thing about my car is I got it signed by my heroes Richard Petty & Dale Inman. Certainly a unique add on to this car! Any more information, I'd be glad to share!

Welcome to the Nest!

You have a rare car there. Not because of the radio though. The A35 trailer towing package is one of, if not the most rare option on a 71 road runner. Only 14 runners were built with that package.

From the VON you listed, 149421 I can tell I have your VIN number on file. I don't know what ownership history you have on the car, but I have a little info about it from 2006. If you're interested, let me know and I'll shoot it over to you via PM.

Eric, please do. I can't seem to find anything on this car except from the gentleman I bought it from in Export, PA. No build sheet or anything left in the car. I would love to find out more. Unfortunately, I don't know to much about the tow trailer package. Only thing I know is that the car at one time had it as per the fender tag. What would I be looking for to determine where the tow hitch would have gone? Any more info would be great. Very excited to hear back from you.

Just was wondering where the first pic was taken? Looks a lot like Wildwood NJ boardwalk.

As far as I know, this towing package did not include a hitch. Here's a description from the Dealership Data Book (courtesy of Barry Washington / Hamtramck Historical)

Just tried to email John, but the email failed. Must not have that address any longer. No luck with the dealer either. Can't find it anywhere. I'll keep trying. Thanks again for your help.

Try Lakeway Motors.
Your PMs should work now. I believe the forum requires a certain number of posts before you have rights to send a PM.
I believe John used to be a member here, but I don't see him in the user list now.
