I would guess .. that a tight 340 in a "A" body should be quicker than my 72 RR with the 400... weight vs Horsepower... sorta thing ..
But... I sure like my 400CID, 4speed, 4:10 gears on 14" tires for pure torque and launch .. it just feels RIGHT!

Never owned a small block mopar but know it's rep really well. I've had a '71GTX and am waiting on my '71 383 4spd RR this month. It's the BB's that get the attention right or wrong. I like the yellow/blk combo over the gold because it would stand out so much more. I have to agree about the grill. That being the '72 is nicer.
For my money, it's the '71 RR BB.

I have had big and small blocks with auto and 4sp. I like the big blocks w/4sp..There is nothing like smoking the tires and banging the gears. Oh and theres the coolest shifter ever put in a muscle car.

I have and always will prefer the '71 over the '72 and I actually prefer the '71 to any year for the Roadrunner name. If the question were about the GTX, then I would have to say the '69 as it looks most like I think the name should and in the same way I think the '70 Superbee is the one that fits it's name perftectly. The '71 Roadrunner looks most like the character and it's smoother styling, refering to the flush marker lights as opposed to the '72's which set on the fenders and quarters. I also prefer the '71's grill and rear bumper and taillights, not to mention it's the last of the greatest engine options (383, 440+6 of which I know a few extremely rare '72's got this option by mistake, and the 426 Hemi). I love all the Roadrunners from the beginning in '68 through '74, but the ones after '74 are hideous abominations.
