72 Road Runner New Member ride

Post by 72 RR fan » Sun Aug 31, 2008 11:16 pm

Been visiting the site off and on...more so lately. Decided to join the forums. My name is Brian. My first car was a 72 Satellite, which I promptly destroyed by accident of course back in 1984...I have always loved Mopars..Had a number of A, B, and C bodys, and more. I finally got another 72 last year. It popped up on the other side of Atlanta from me during the week on Craigslist. I knew I wouldn't be able to go look at it, so I sent a friend with my truck, trailer, and cash to get it sight unseen. The guy was using it for a daily driver. He had got it after a long spell of sitting after an engine fire. It had a horrible paint job with lots of poor bodywork under it. It ran and drove okay. It's pretty solid, but needs a lot. The floors and trunk are solid. There is some odd rust in places and some bondo in the fenders. The righ rear quarter was bashed at one point. That'll be my challenge. It's a 400 car with a 440 now...Lemon Twist, 727 bench seat car....nice interior! I like the set up....Not real rare options on this one for a 72, but just fits the bill for me.

I thouht I'd push her out of the garage and fire her up to celebrate the holliday weekend, but no can do...battery dead...jumpbox dead...fuel line leaking..LOL! No worries though...I'll fire it up tomorrow.

My plans are to restore this car to an original appearance except for the engine and wheels. I gotta wait till I get some parts and have a good window in which to focus on it.

Anyway, here's some pics...I'll be posting stuff from time to time, etc...

Welcome Brian. Seems we all have something to do to these cars. Some members has some good looking cars and some are in the restoring process. Just remember: It takes time, $$$$, and patience. Whats cool about this site is that it is a smaller community, only dealing with these years. We're willing to help each other in anything. Other sites might give a quicker response to a question.

Cool car though. I like the Lemon Twist color but partial to the Tor-Red :D

Thanks for the welcome...This car is solid, but it'll be a long road home...I have two other projects...I have to decide which one to do first...I got rid of project quantity and am gonna go for quality now.

I may not twist any bolts counter-clockwise any time soon. I am just getting through modifing my house to accomadate my cars better. I should be able to put this car on a rotisserie and roll it under the deck. I had a drive poured under it and it will keep the car dry.

Of my three cars this one is second best as far as condition, so I may do the 59 Plymouth first. It's hard to decide. This will be the easiest to find parts for LOL!! I have had little luck in finding a parts car...I looked at a RL23 car that was advertised as a Road Runner..it was south of Atlanta....REAL ROUGH!! There were a couple of others I found too. They were worse than described too. I have a line on a salvage yard that has a couple of them in it.....sooner or later there will be time to check it out...A rust free quater panel for this car is hard to find, especially in Georgia...we get a bit of rust from the high humidity...better than some places. The search is always fun.

I'm glad the original grille is there...in pretty good shape..someone painted it flat black though....I learned here that the spoiler is not original...guess that's why I couldn't find it on the data plate..It did have a strobe stripe..half vinyl top....it's got a rear swaybar.

*ONE ODD THING* It seems to have had chrome trim on the tops of the doors along side the bottoms of the windows...I was told that is unusual for Road Runners...is that true????...I have seen another that had it...they are missing though.

I like the slots too....I think they'll stay!

Here a pic of the data plate....I had read somewhere on the board that someone likes to keep pics of them...

The other pic is where that trim is missing....if anyone can tell my if that unusual..or if they have some spares...

Thanks!

Yea, I know of only a few Mopar fans local...no B-body guys though...good to know you're in Douglasville...I don't feel so alone....maybe we could trade off names of local shops for resto service...media blasting....chrome...powder coating etc. Though it looks as you are well into your project from the thumbnail...
