71 72 FENDER GILLS

Post by ROGERLEE » Mon Jun 30, 2008 4:14 pm

i always wondered why the 71 cuda, got all the stylin cues and gills, i think the b-body's would have looked as good or better with fender gills, so far with all the good folks here doing photshop, i have yet to see a sharp looking gtx or roadrunner/satellite with fender gills.
it will take somebody out there with a whole lot more brains than me, so somebody do a 71 72 with fender gills, thanks

Check out the GTX styling prototype as shown in this photo from MCG. It has fender gills!

I kinda like the way that looks. It's hard to see, the image is small. I'll have to try to blow it up. The only negative thing I can think of is, it's a Roadrunner, which is a bird and I never saw a bird with gills. But from a styling point of view it works. I always thought they would look cool with some kind of door depression in the rear of the door that would carry over into the rear quarter. To simulate a rear brake vent.

I have an original factory design photo from 1968 with a 71 2dr Satellite that has gills in the quarter panel down low just ahead of the wheel opening.....so they were considering it!

so it'd have the scoops like on a 71 challenger maybe, eh? that'd be cool. so would the fender gills - the 71 cuda is a great car imo the grille and the gills make it the best cuda

thanks bruce, eric, did you happen to read that article???, it says if i can make it out , the pic was taken in 1969, that means the 70 gtx was on the old b-body style..... totally diferrent body, skipping 71's grille with that slanted 72 gtx emblem, thats is some wierd stuff there!!!, and that is a wild looking gill wrapping around like that, they should have sold this car!!

Remember, they were working on the designs years before the cars were released. From the photos I have, the basic design for the 71s was finalized by 68 and they were just working out the fine details.

The Satellites could have the gills. . .we'd call them fender vents. ..to keep things from being so darn fishy. . .

73/74 fender vents

It's a bit rough, but try finding a high def, clear 73/74 front end. .
