what's this?

I don't know how this relates to this discussion, but on my 73, in that location, are some holes between the spotwelds (where the 4 pans come together). When I was scraping off the seam filler, this spot was covered by some sort of thin metal body tape, maybe because they couldn't fill the gaps or something. No bolts though.

By the way thank you guys for exploring this topic as it has helped me to figure out another piece of my restoration puzzle , as my car does not have the boom damper . Thanks Dave
