Man, I crack myself up!

I've been looking into having my 73 Runner acid dipped, or whatever you call it. Anyone ever have this done on a Mopar? I've been reading pros and cons and lots of stories, but not one about it being done on a Mopar. I'm not even sure my car needs it, I'm just trying to lay all my options on the table. She's got 34 years of grime and grease and undercoating underneath (finally got it on my lift), and lots of surface scaling on the floors and trunk under the carpets. Seems like a complete stripping would really show me what I have to work with, and any surprises that are lurking. I hate surprises.

I know they do it to the shoebox chevys a lot. I watched a thing on the trans am races. They used to acid dip the AARs and TAs for races to make them lighter. So, I guess it could be done and a lot faster than stripping. But, I don't know prices between that and media blasting.

Just make sure you find a place that also has the ability to do a dip ecoat also. That way you'll be sure all the areas that were stripped will be coated with paint. Otherwise all those areas that you can't get to with paint spray that have been freshly stripped will start to rust!

I'll second that. That not having it re-coated is something to be very aware of.

Also- see if you can find out when they do the change of the chemicals. That way you get the best results from the Strip/neutralize? and re-coat for your money.

I know at Muscle Car Restorations in Eau Claire, WI they really promote it. They say it really gives you a good idea of what really needs to be repaired. Unibody cars especially since there's lots of places a media blaster can't get to. They use a place from the Chicago area. Cost for a dip and e coat is around 8K. You can go to their website and see the whole process along with an explaination of the process. I'm planning on spending the money to do it right. I think it makes sense, especially when you're already spending the kind of money it costs for a resto these days. If you're planning on flipping your car, I wouldn't do it, but for someone that's keeping their car long term, I think it makes sense to take care of all the issues once instead of having something come out later. musclecarrestorations.com They are having an open house next weekend. IIRC the last price I saw was about $1500 for and entire car body (chemical and paint dips)

What is the paint dip? A primer? Who had it for $1500? That sounds awful cheap.

The price I remember is from a few years back. I'm sure like everything else, it's gone up. The place I remember was Ready Strip in Michigan...not sure if they're still around. An internet search didn't turn up much...
