two tone paint

Post by landon1 » Sun Feb 12, 2006 8:15 pm

Hey
I was wondering if it is possible to tell from the build sheet what color the second color on two tone cars is. My build sheet says body color and then the roof color, but not the second body color. i've seen black (most popular) and gray.
Thanks

I believe gray was the only factory lower body color for a two tone body car. IIRC there should be a V02 on the broadcast sheet to designate two tone?

Yeah it says V02, and I've seen black more than gray, so I didin't know.
Thanks

I think black was what happened when a car got a repaint

Well when I read the 72 Option and Accessory report there are .2% two-tone optioned 1972 Road Runners.
I real don't know what that means.
I thought for 1972 two-tone ment lower argent silver as on the SSP's. Would 1972 RR's with two-tone have chrome body line trim?
Would two-tone be painted upper roof as in year past?
Strange indead.

Well the .2% means that 2/1000, or 1/500 would be two-toned. The gray I just found out about-I was thinking black, gray, or white for choices, but I guess it was only gray. I know the boxy B-bodys could be two toned in two shades of green, blue, etc. All the two tone cars I've seen have had the bodyside chrome, except for one that was on ebay. It was a 72 RR clone in yellow/black with a black canopy vinyl roof. The roof is what we're trying to figure out now. I guess there's a code for the vinyl roofs-my car just has a paint color like it was a painted roof, but nobody's seen one of them before. The two tone cars I've seen usually have a vinyl top in white, but there's a pic in the satellite image gallery of a beige car with black lowers and a tan top, but I've never seen a tan top before and I guess the lowers could only be gray, so maybe that's a bad example... :?
Maybe that helps.
I've looked at the catalog for the satellite cars and I don't see a two tone option- was that a special order deal?

Hey Landon, when I said I'd never SEEN a '71 and up b-body with a two-tone painted roof, I meant just that, in all my years messing with these cars I've never seen one. I didn't mean to imply that there WEREN'T any with painted roofs. Shoot, one thing I've learned with Ma Mopar is that just about ANYTHING was possible. I've seen a couple of painted top e-bodies, but never "our years" of Road Runners or Satellites.

I meant it for the 71-4 b-bodies. i looked it up and saw older b's and a challenger T/A with a painted vinyl top. I didn't mean for it to seem like I was saying there isn't such a thing... :( I was just saying that nobody had seen one, maybe not even heard of one, that was a 71 and up.

Dave may know more about the rarity of this....hopefully he'll join this discussion. Hopefully when your car was repainted, they painted over the original finish. That would be the best way to determine how your car was originally.

I don't know. It was originally the blue/white/gray and when I got it it was black with a white starsky and hutch stripe. I stripped it and painted it Intense Blue Pearl 1.5-2 years ago. I remember that the thin width by the rear side windows was blue. You can still see, becasue I didn't take it off, under the wide drip rails and under the weatherstrip that it is painted white. On the lower body, I found gray, white, and a darker shade of blue-possibly B7, but the car was B5 with W3 roof and the VO2 two tone, which I guess should have been gray. Maybe the white was more of a primer and the blue was overspray?
Anyway, when I get my Dad's camera, I can take pics of the white roof areas, but since it's painted now, I can't really look underneath-well maybe I can look under the rockers where the sidepipes are now. I'll check it out.

Hmmm... I was thinking that the 2 tone paint treatment with the color break and moulding on the bone line was a 72 only opiton. I can't say I've ever seen a 71 coded for one. I'd really be interested to see the fender tag and broadcast sheet for this car. I have seen a painted top 71, but can't remember the color combo just now. I believe it was a white painted top though. It had the vinyl top mouldings on the c-pillars.

Well, I started looking, since there's a blizzard today, and all of the two tone pics I could find are 72's. Some have the 71 sidemarkers, but they all have the 72 taillights. I know I 've found a pic of a 71, but I don't remember where I found it. The buld date is August 19, 1970, so that's fairly early?
Anyway, can send the broadcast sheet through email if anyone wants to see the painted roof part. Should be able to get the fender tag this weekend.

Okay, just saw how to attach a picture on here. I couldn't fit the whole thing on here, but this is the two tone paint and roof section...

Ok, after looking at your post, your car has the GB5 body color and the GW3 roof color. That's what the V02 relates to - two tone = painted roof. Car should have had the vinyl top type mouldings on the quarter panels.

I'm guessing that interior code is H2B5? If so, neat color combo. Blue car, white top, blue interior. If that was an L or N code car, I'd be seriously interested in trying to buy it from ya. :)

Okay, so no lower body color. That's good-I'm not a big fan of the gray lowers. :D Anyone know about how many cars had the painted top, or is that one of the almost impossible to find out things?
I think it had a 318 and someone put in a "correct for a 71" Hi Po 440. The dates are right, but I E44 is 318, and so is G, right? But I heard that with a few mods(headers, intake, heads, carb, etc.) a 318 can be just as powerful as a 383 and supposedly better mileage-I've never got more than 10-usually 7. Oh well, numbers matching is a cool deal, but not that big unless you have a hemi, six pack, etc. car-where the big money is-if a guy could actually part with it, but I don't know why.
