I've seen many 71s restored with an all-black grille, and I always chalked it up as a restoration mistake. If I'm not mistaken, a grille for an RR or GTX was black and argent silver (the one on my car is). Satellites got silver grilles.

Yeah the mystery of the black grills, been wondering about this myself.I bought my gtx in 1979 it has an all black grill no silver. On the back of the grill is part #3442207 which the parts book lists for r-m,r-p,and r-s.The parts book also lists different grills for r-l (3442011) and r-h (3443014).Anybody have one with this part# painted silver?Maybe some left the factory without paint.Mid year change maybe?

I'm not aware of any mid-year change on the grilles. RRs and GTXs got silver and black.

I think the 71 grill is black with argent silver across the bottom and in the inner headlight holes. At least that is the way it is illustrated in the old ads and road tests for this car back in 1970 magazines.

Black plastic (not painted) with argent on the base and headlight rings is correct for a RR or GTX, the Satellite got all silver. It was pretty common back in the day to paint them all black. If it has black paint on it, it isn't original.
