how do you?
working on my rallye dash - I have 2 questions:
how do you:
take the knob off for the headlights?
take the knobs off for the heater controls?
man are they stuck on...
also what is the correct paint for the woodgrain on the rallye dash, and where can I buy it? its for my 71 runner...

Re: how do you?
To remove the headlight knob, you have to push the release button on the headlight switch. If you are not removing the dash, this means you have to reach up behind it, find the switch and then push the release while pulling out on the knob. It will turn on the lights if the battery is still connected. If you are removing the entire dash panel, it is easier to just leave it in place for now, and then when you go to remove the panel, pull it out until you can remove the wiring harness from the headlight switch, then you will be able to see the release on it and release it easily at that point.

Re: how do you?
That button is on top of the switch and its spring loaded, and let me tell you its hard to get to. The heater knobs .. you have to take the heater control out and dissemble it to get the levers out. The knobs are made on there. Be very careful doing this, I broke my housing trying to put it back. If you look very close to the wood grain on the cluster you will also notice 2 or 3 faint lines of black paint on there also. From different angles. Like they just barley hit with a paint can to make the grain stand out.

Re: how do you?
thanks guys dash is pulled - will try to take some pics! trying to figure out the correct brown used for the woodgrain panel - might go to the local hobby shop and see what they have - still can't get the temp knobs off, you said they were made on there? so no chance of getting them off then?

Re: how do you?
I pulled on mine pretty good, I didn't want to break them cause they are too hard to find. You can take the leaver out, but you have to disassemble the heater control box, but be very careful, I think 71 is a one year only deal. What is wrong with the ones you have?

Re: how do you?
Whats wrong with the paint that a good cleaning wont fix? Whats wrong with the heater leavers? If they are in really bad shape, maybe you should send them out to be done. They are so easy to break, and so hard to find.

Re: how do you?
the paint is just really faded - I may or may not paint it - nothing is really wrong with them - I just have everything out and apart right now - its just a good time to do them - its winter and I'm being picky lol gives me more to do in the spare time..71bird wrote:Whats wrong with the paint that a good cleaning wont fix?
