What tool do i need to take out my distributor gear?(318)Im taking out my cam but i cant until i get the gear out around the distributor. What would be great is the measurements of it so i could make one. What Im asking could possibly make no sense whatso ever, its what i was told.

I'm only assuming, since i haven't worked on a small block, but on a big block you stick a big fat slotted screwdriver in the slot of the gear and turn counter clockwise, which raises the gear up off the teeth on the cam....unfortunately, i don't have my book here

I found the book,but I'm confused.
Books directions for taking a distributor out.
"1.Take off the cap and wire assembly.
2.Disconnect the primary coil wire and vacuum control tube.
3.Mark the relative positions of the distributor and rotor on the engine block.
4.Loosen the distributor mounting and lift out the distributor."
It says nothing about the gear.I would only guess that the distributor shaft has a groove in it so it locks the gear?

The big screwdriver twist usually gets it up, but maybe not out. If you're CAREFUL, you can get it the rest of the way with long-nosed pliers. If all that fails, a piece of sheetmetal bent into an L hooked under the gear should do it.
