Air Grabber Air Cleaner heights

I have a '71 Roadrunner 440 4v w/ an air grabber.
Here's my question:
I want to find a way to lower the air cleaner set-up to make room for a 1/2" to 1" spacer under the carb. This will help make my car more street friendly. I know the '71-71 cleaners on 440's are shorter than the 383's.
But, any ideas about the '70's? Someone told me they were even shorter.
Can anyone tell me for real?
If so, I plan on using the '70 for driving, and the original for shows and cruise-ins when the hood is open.
Thanks,
Jim

I'm not sure on any differences on the 70 units versus the 71s, with the exception that all of the 70's used the oval element and lid, 4bbl (383 or 440), 6bbl or Hemi. The 71's use the round element and lid for the 4bbl applications, of course.

Instead of buying a 70 unit, you might want to look into some of the fiberglass reproductions that are on the market. You might be able to take one of those, and trim the air cleaner neck down to meet your needs, and still have that correct look from the top. Plus, then you could make sure it fits exactly your setup rather than something that is just "close".

you can actually contact k&n and they make a pan that lowers the filter for special high performance distributors that will also make clearance for a spacer www.knfilters.com
