Belt changing - need to pull PS or fan??
I need to change my alternator belt and I can't figure out (even though I have a shop manual - can't find belt changing procedure in there) what needs to be pulled/loosened to get it out of there. The fan and crank pullies seem to be touching, one on top of the other, so how the heck does that alternator belt come out?

Even if I remove the PS belt (I'm not clear on how to loosen the PS pump btw), I don't see how the ALT belt comes out. It's trapped by the two pullies in front of the motor - the fan and crank... Wait, do I pull the fan? Or maybe it'll fit around it. Hmm. Hard to think without looking at it - heh.

Argh, I just realized my brother has my torque wrench, too.

k, you loosen the bolt on the power steering pump brakcet, the pump should lower down (if not, push it down)...then that belt will be off... after that, loosen the lower alternator bracket bolt (goes through the curved bracket piece and into the alternator. the alternator will lower down, just like the power steering pump...VOILA belts are off
I gotta take a pic of this, because the way my car is set up, for some reason, you can't get the rear belt off without removing the fan or crank pulley completely.
here's a diagram of what I'm talking about. The fan pulley and crank pulley are right on top of each other (and they're double pulleys, one isn't being used because there's no A/C on the car anymore).

I get what you are saying! the crank and fan pulleys are so close together that you cant take the alt belt off,you could cut it but the new belt still would have to be put on,in that case you will have to remove the fan pulley. Here is my setup I dont have power steering or a/c.

Not even that if you pull it atleast over one of teh fan blades, and pull it towards the middle, you have enough room to pull it over another blade, just keep doing that,i wanna say its almost like a button to a shirt, you stick in one side wich gives you room for the otherside.ha halandon1 wrote:that's what i'm thinking - it may not look like it, but it will wiggle it's way out of there...but taking the fan/pulley off isn't a big deal at all if you cant
