Road Runner Nest

Ok this maybe a dumb question, but what is the difference between the Road Runner and the GTX? I see they have different decals and emblems, but what else?

They are magical i think,

Im not really sure,ive wonderd about this too,there probly little things different about them that the everyday person wouldnt notice

1971 was the last year the GTX was a separate model (RS23 in the VIN) from the road runner (RM23). The GTX was considered the upscale model, the businessman's hotrod. Besides the obvious badging and striping options that differed between models, they also had different engine and interior options. The GTX standard engine was the 440 4v with 440+6 and HEMI engines as optional. The standard engine for the road runner was the 383 4v with 340, 440+6, and HEMI optional (note the 440 4V was not available on the road runner). Transmissions, the road runner standard was the 3spd manual, with 4spd and torqueflite auto options. The GTX came standard with the torqueflite auto, and the 4spd was a no cost option.
Also different were the interior options. Bench seat vinyl was standard on the road runner, with vinyl bucket and cloth/vinyl bucket optional, while the GTX came standars with vinyl bucket, cloth/vinyl bench and cloth/vinyl buckets were optional. There were a lot of other minor option availability differences, but that hits the high points.
For 72-74, the GTX was no longer a separate model, but became an option on the road runner (all had RM2_ VIN numbers). It came with badging and designated that you got the 440 4V engine. Others may want to add to the 72-74 info.

'71 GTXs also were trimmed out a little nicer than Road Runners--rocker moldings, the chrome tail light bezels, etc.

71- gtx hemi 4 speed tran dana 60 with 354 or 410
72 the same but 354 no 410
73 74 gtx 440 auto tran no 4speed no 440 6bbl no hemi no dana 60

I'm not quite sure but of all the differences the rocker molding is about my favorite.

A 1972 Roadrunner with a 440 (4 bbl or 6 pack...Hemi no longer offered) engine had 3 "GTX" emblems on them. Not the big one like on the grille of a 1971 GTX but smaller ones. One on each fender behind the front wheels, the other on the trunk lid.

The "proper" place on the trunk was on the right with the circular standing bird decal. For some reason mine came with the GTX emblem on the left side, which is where I put it when I restored the car.

torque boxes were standard equipment on GTX's, as well as the K frame skid plate. but then again, to the best of my knowledge, these items were standard on any 440-4bbl or up-optioned mopar muscle machines. the fact that the entry level GTX came with the mighty monster made them all equipped that way. also, as mentioned above, GTX's came with the premium door panels and the 71's came with the belt mouldings and rocker mouldings. the cosmetic GTX goodies were also on the sebring plus, including the taillight bezels in 71, except that the rocker mouldings are different. the rocker mouldings on 71 GTX's are unique to the GTX alone. i have also come to my own personal conclusion that the machine gun exhaust tips with cutout valance was standard on 71 GTX's..........my fixation is definitely on the 71 models, but i love them all!

The Power Bulge Hoods for GTX Runners in the 73/74 also came with a GTX badge on the hood



This also replaced the standing road runner on the rear deck lid, right hand corner.

Simply cosmetic badges. ..

although the 1974 GTX didnt have the 440, it could only come with the 400 ci.

Hey, I do too! I bought mine off of e-bay for about a hundred bucks. The guy didn't link it to the Roadrunner and when everyone else was bidding up to 500 or 600, I snuck in and bought the gem!
