Correct placement of 1972 GTX emblems?

I know my '72 RR/GTX has the three emblems, and the two fender emblems are placed correctly, but the deck lid emblem and decal appear strange to me...does anyone have a picture of an original trunklid setup on a GTX? I need measurements for the decal and emblem. My emblem is placed above and to the right of the decal, is this correct?

Hmmm....I just looked through the 71-72 factory decal and emblem placement documents, and they do not show the GTX emblems for 72. Here is an original paint U code (RR/GTX) car...it does have the GTX emblems on the fenders

Hmmm...no emblem on the decklid, huh? I have heard some cars had them and some didn't, anyone got any ideas on this or any more pics? Also, I would like measurements if anyone has been through this before, for the fenders too, I just want to make sure mine are dead-on.
Thanks!!!
Mike

There are very nice illustrations in the Factory 1972 Car Parts Catalog showing exactly where the emblems are supposed to go. I used them to correctly place the emblems on my wife's 72 RR.

If you don't have the Factory 1972 Passenger Car Parts Catalog, I can probably scan the illustrations and post them or Email them to you.

Yes!!! PLEASE scan this and let's post it, I want the REAL story on where this decklid emblem is really supposed to be. Mine is mounted kind of oddly as well, looks similar to you purple car there, if you could scan that factory tech bulletin/manual page, that would be priceless!
Thanks,
Mike

Correct placement of 1972 GTX emblems?

Hi Fellows:

My memory is failing me in my old age. I mistakenly thought that the illustrations were in the 1972 Body Service Manual. They are actually contained in the Chrysler Factory 1972 Passenger Car Parts Catalog. I corrected my earlier post.

I'm fortunate enough to have an original print of the 1972 Parts Catalog, so the page scanned very nicely. I've posted a reduced size scan of the illustration page below, but if you need to see a larger scan of it, just click the following link:

Notice that the correct placement for the GTX emblem is above and slightly to the left of the deck lid Road Runner decal.

Hope that this dispells the "emblem placement mystery". :)

Also, THANKS mopar71 for checking out and complimenting my website. I started Maryland Mopars, and built the website, 14 months ago and it's been growing like weeds ever since. We cruise with alot of really great Mopar guys who have some awesome cars.

And ABSOLUTELY I linked my site to the RR nest! I'm very partial to the 71-72 Satellites, as I now own my 4th!

With all the hooplah that the 68-70 RR's always seem to get, I think it's the COOLEST that there is a website devoted to OUR genre!!

I have spent countless hours years ago flipping the pages of Mopar parts catalogs, from that time, trying to pin a part number down accurately enough to place an order. It was a time before computers and microfiche and the books were all we had at my local Chrysler/Plymouth dealer where I worked a parts counter for several years in my youth. I have a copy of the 72' book now and am familiar with the diagram mentioned. My experience then has shown that these diagrams were meant to show the general locations of these parts only. I believe the location for the rear GTX badge above the circle bird is not correct. The cars around the dealer then, the 72' RR/GTX that I helped to maintain then, and my research more recently indicates to me that the correct location is to the right of the circle bird, with the circle bird shifted slightly to the left from the standard RR location.

The parts catalogue diagram would seem to support the original paint car pic I posted above. Looks like the GTX emblem could have been removed at some point in time on that car.

Interesting what 72RoadRunnerGTX has said, and he may be correct. But here's a couple of thoughts.

We can agree that the placement of the fender emblems in the illustrations are in the absolute correct spots, not just in the "general" area, right? Why would the trunk emblem be illustrated any less accurately.

And it's also been my observation that other car body illustrations in the book, not just of our RR/GTX, show accurate representations of where their emblems/stripes correctly go. Why should the RR/GTX illustrations be any different?

Lastly, seeing as how Eric's pic above is an original paint GTX, the factory's placement of the decal is such that there wouldn't have been enough room for the emblem to be mounted to it's right, and their does appear to be "wear" in the paint above the decal where the emblem may have originally been mounted.

I can say that, of the handful of 72 GTX's I've actually see in the "flesh", none of them had the GTX emblem in the position that 72RoadRunnerGTX's is in, but that's just my experience.

Perhaps we will never know for absolute sure. But I'm thinking that using Chrysler's own illustrations as a guide is probably a good authority to go on. Otherwise, Galen Govier....call your office! :)

Thank you all, my car's emblem placement is exactly the same as the factory manual shows, the Road Runner decal is in the bottom right corner of the decklid and the GTX emblem is placed above, and slightly to the left of the decal. I really appreciate the help. I will post a pic when I get a chance.
