Hey all,
There's a guy in town with a 72 440 for sale, $300. Are there markings on the block to indicate whether or not it's a HP? What should I look for?
Thx

Hey,
Thanks for the info. I just talked to him on the phone, and he says it's from a motor home. Is that good or bad??

If I am not mistaken the 440 motorhome engines had enlarged water passages as to not overheat, I was also told that you cannot bore them out to much because of the thinner cylinder walls.

440 blocks are mostly the same(Industrial, Car,or motorhome)...
76 and up have slightly thinner walls
Not all motor homes have the water "jacketed" heads...mostly
they came with standard 440's
I would check to make sure that is is not a 413....same as a 440
but with lesser bore....came in alot of early 70's motor homes.....sounds
better to have a 440....even though you can make a 413 run like stink...
also the transmission guy said that he has seen motor home with
the hemi style trans....these will have the extra wide front band.
good luck and the price sounds right

Well, I couldn't find any H's at all on the block. There were some numbers on the side spaced roughly this way:
11 5 76 (sounds like a date to me)
and underneath that:
4006630-440-9
Stamped on top of the engine at the rear and facing up was:
7T4 440 E
All greek to me...any ideas?

the E is for cast crank...and you are correct that is the date...11-5-76
T is for truck...but I guess the group toghether (7T4) is for motorhome.
SOME 4006630-440 cast in '76 and later have REALLY thick main saddle supports. This would be great for lots of tourque and MONSTER horse power!!!!
By the way did the heads look normal?

It's been a long time since I laid eyes on 440 heads. I wouldn't remember what normal looks like. Reckon I shoulda taken some pictures.

The motor home heads have a casting number of (3751213).
To Quote Ma Mopar" The 1976,77,78 blocks for the 400 and 440 are thinwall casting design. As such they shouldnt be overboard more than .020" Therefore the pre-1976 blocks are better for racing purposes.
