Hood warps?

Post by Serious Satellite » Tue Jan 23, 2007 8:30 am

Okay, here we go. I bought a 74 Road Runner Power Bulge Hood for the Satellite--love that hood--and I need to strip it down and address some minor cancer issues. I was talking to a body shop guy here in the area and he told me I shouldn't sand it down to metal because I'd probably warp the hood.

Now, I used to be a helicopter mechanic and I've worked with sheet metal before, but I think he's running a game on me so he can get the work instead of my self help idea.

Is he right about warping the hood if you clean it up by sanding it down to metal?

warp WHAT!!!

Post by scottish440 » Tue Jan 23, 2007 9:24 am

the only time I have ever heard or seen of metal warping was
during sand blasting.....this can warp a hood quickly with a little
inexperience and the wrong media...(blasting gets hot)

but I guess if you sand in one place(the same exact place) for an
hour or 2...you could then get it hot enuff to warp the hood...lol

also I have been the friend of paint in all of my years of painting...
and I have a saying that has NEVER failed me......IF IT IS STUCK...
DON'T UNSTICK IT.

if the paint is good.....ruf it up and prime it.....chances are it is stuck to the car better than your primer will!!!!

if it is peeling, multiple layers or not factory....get rid of it.......

if you have surface rust and this is the issue...sand all you can(media
blast is the best) buy some SEM wipe on rust inhibitor...prime and paint

take care scott

Sandblasting CAN warp metal if done improperly, but if done right, it works out well. I sandblasted the air grabber hood for my Road Runner, but approached it with care. It turned out excellent!

ive been doing body work for about 15 years now and yes it is possible to warp body panels when sanding with an orbital sander or a da with heavier sand paper. if you keep it moving and dont bear down in one spot for too long there wont be a problem but if you use to much pressure or stayin one spot to long you can get it hot enough to cause problems, jeff

you can take the part to a acid bath or have it solvent bathed if you dont want to sand or media blast it. it is metal last time i checked solvents dont warp metal.
