gauges

Post by garyc1 » Tue Nov 22, 2005 1:15 pm

Has anybody tried to repair any factory gauges, or knows how to test them? My water temp gauge stopped working and I can’t get it fixed. I tried a new sensor and that didn’t work. I shorted the wire at the sensor to ground and the gauge went to full hot, so I think the gauge and wire are ok. Is there a difference between the original sensor and modern sensors? I have a factory service manual, but it says to check it with a mopar tester, and that I don’t have. I hate to put an after market gauge in my bird, any help would be appreciated. BTW it’s a 72 RR with rally gauges.

sounds like the wiring/gauge is working!!!!

to test the sensor- use a ohm meter from the tip and the threaded portion of the sensor- cold should be a high reading- guessing about 200????? ohms- there is no actual reading I have found from mopar as to the real reading!!!!

using boiling hot water- put the sensor in it with it connected to the meter- use alligator clips- reading should go down to around 30-70 ???? ohms!!!

Well your guage, power and wires are fine. Did you get the right sensor? There is one for the guage and one for the idiot light- forgive me I had to ask. New and old sensors work pretty much the same. There are two types of sensors, however.
The one for the guage will change resistance from hi to low,( cold to hot). Where the "idiot light" type is either off ( with in operating specs) or on- (overheat) say 230 degrees F. If you have the sensor for the "light" it won't show on the guage until the car until it is overheating.

If your checking the power supply on these cars it is a pulsing 7 volts DC to the instrument panel guages. That converter is the little metal box attached to the back of the instrument custer.

When putting the new sensor in- did you use teflon tape? The sensor HAS to have ground potential on the outside of it to work.

If thats all cool then do what the Deputy says.

I think the readings you should see are about 20K ohms cold and 120 ohms hot.

Let us know how you do.

Nice link Deputy!

10-4 found this one the other day!!

looked at all my mopar manuals and not one says what the resistance should be for the gauge temp sensor readings- just a mention of a L M H adjustable test unit!!!!!

finally found some numbers!!!! go here!! 240 ohm's cold--10 ohms boiling!!!!
