73 440 HP - how much?

Post by rt-man » Thu Dec 01, 2005 7:45 pm

Well, I'm trying to deepen my drivetrain, so to speak, from the 318 in the car to a BB. A local ad has a fellow selling a reputed '73 440 HP, from the oil pan up to the top of the air cleaner. He says he doesn't know anything about the motor, other than its sitting in the '63 Sport Fury he bought. he says the former owner told him its been bored .030. Its in the car now so I can go hear it run. he's never removed a valve cover. The pad near the water jacket he could read said J440 HP. He's going to jack the car up to read the numbers on the side of the block. Cast iron heads, Holley DP.

Did a '73 440HP have a cast or forged crank?

He's asking $2,000/obo. Mystery motor, but I can hear it in the car. Anybody care to tell me what YOU'd pay???

Take your time looking for a 440. Yes they will be more than a 383 but I could get a complete 383 apart for $200 last April at a swap meet.

There will be others. With no reliable info you may end up needing a complete rebuild even after laying out 2K.

Try Auto Zone etc for a bare block and contact a local Mopar shop for rebuild prices. Keep calling area shops. Someone may have a 440 laying in a corner just waiting for you.

Good luck but 2K for an unknown is asking for trouble in my opinion.

A guy here was selling his 440+6 for about 3500. This was a BUILT motor. He was pulling it for a HEMI.

440 and 727 on eBay

Post by CtownRunner » Fri Dec 02, 2005 6:57 am

Right now eBay motors listed under 1971 440HP Charger Cuda Challenger GTX Road Runner
item 4593434878

high bid $202
reserve not meet.

Mike email the seller if it does not meet reseve and sell. Ask him about it location and shipping could clinch the deal or break it.

440 and tranny core to rebuild the way you want.

Thanks, guys. I feel the same way about it.

The owner gave me some info. The numbers on the side of the block read: 369 8830 440, production date 1/19/73. He pulled a valve cover last night and said they're 346 heads. He didn't check the balancer to determine cast or forged crank.

I may offer something stupid like $1,000 and see if he'll bite.

To rt-man,

according to my parts interchange book those numbers are for a 73 440HP
block and heads, the crank is forged and if the rod numbers are 1851535
then they are 6 pak rods. yes they came that way.
