'72 Satellite upgrades

Post by ccb_v2 » Fri Jan 28, 2005 4:24 pm

Ok, here is the plan, I'd like to drop a 440 and 727 transmission in my Plymouth. It currently has a 318 and 904 transmission. I know I'll need things like mounts, etc. , and I assume I will need a different driveshaft (I assume the 727 is longer than the 904? and has different number of teeth etc.). I would obviously need to replace the open rear. Can I find a replacement 8 3/4 "sure grip" rear at a yard from various model and year Plymouth/Chrysler/Dodge vehicles with the same size rear or am I looking for specifics due to differences in the axles and such?

You will definately need to go to a 71-74 8 3/4 rear end. The yard sure grips are far and few between. Plus you can't tell the difference from the outside unless you spin the wheels. You're best bet is to hunt down a housing with axles from the mopar supliers, texas acres, tony's, G&D, moparts, etc. And get a new sure grip chunk from a rear end supplier like Randy's Ring & Pinion. It will be a little costly, but's it's practically a one time buy so it's worth it. A BB drive shaft for 71-72 BBodies will be needed. Any decent drivetrain shop should be able to make one for you. The dimensions are in the shop manual.

Other essentials;

1. Larger radiator, a 22" aluminum may work for a 440. A 26" radiator has a different core support.
2. Good brakes. The 440 is way heavy so the stock front drums should be upgraded if you can.
3. Suspension. Especailly the torsion bars, rear leafs, and front sway bar for handling. That is unless this car is for drag racing. Otherwise the weight differnce will make that car slide on the 318 stuff.
4. Miscellaneos, the throttle cable, kickdown, and ignition wiring are completely different from BB to SB so get the right ones.

Other than that if you use the 440 mounts for 71-72 BBody it will bolt right in. 8)

I just noticed your site. I've got a 770 Street Avenger sitting at my dad's If your interested in it let me know because it's only got about 100 miles on it and it's not going anywhere yet.

just read this topic and this is exactly what I did with my satelite. alt and power steering brackets and pulleys took some searching but had no trouble with wiring, mine has disc brakes, but with new calipers and pads for reliability it's working fine. put in a 9 1/4 rear from the engine donor car cause it's all I had and it bolted right in. redid the springs and brakes on it at the install so it's all good there. haven't had any truobles with it since.

oh, yeah forgot something, it's been awhile! I put headers on because the manifolds wouldn't clear. and then put in a floor shifter and console from a 'cuda, was going to anyway but the shift linkage would have run right thru the collector if I didn't.
