Franklin Mint 1/24th 71 Road Runner - don't bother!

Post by Dave » Tue Feb 08, 2005 1:18 pm

Just had a chance to really review some detailed pictures of Franklin Mint's latest release - a 71 Hemi Road Runner in GY3. All I can say is, "Save your money!"

Image

Granted, I've not seen one in person, but here's my review just from the detailed pictures I've seen (found them on an eBay Auction, link at the bottom of my comments).

Body
- Car isn't "round" enough. It's too slab sided. Granted, this is a challenge of working with diecast, and even the Ertl 1/18ths suffer from this too. The 1/43rds from Hot Wheels are the only diecast models I've seen so far that get it right.

- Same nasty seam on the front of the fenders as the 1/24th scale Monagram kits have. I understand this is a necessary evil because of the shape of that area of the car, and the limitations of producing a diecast model. However, they could have at least done a bit better job working the dies to that seam didn't stand out SO much.

- It has a seam on the lower quarters as well. This is the ONLY model of this car, plastic or diecast that I've ever seen designed this way. It looks terrible.

- The rear valance isn't the right angle, and is oversized. Makes the back of the car look completely wrong

- Neither the roofline, c-pillar nor backlight are the right shape.

- Front bumper is oversized, and the front valance is undersized, throwing the perspective completely off. Grille emblem is also oversized.

- Strobe stripe is neither correctly placed, nor of the correct dimensions.

- Simply terrible execution of the marker lights.

Chassis

- No body color - everything is black.

- Black transmission, driveshaft and gas tank

Engine Bay

- All black with no body color

- Drastically out of proportion emissions decal

- Completely wrong washer bottle.

Interior

- Wrong door panels. I believe what they have used are a 72 design.

- Poor execution of the instrument cluster.

- Entire Dash isn't the correct shape

- I believe they are attempting to model a Strato-vent car, but neglected to paint the vents on the dash black.

- What looks to be a silver pull on the ash tray.

-Out of scale shifter handle. Though to be fair, pretty much all models have this issue, and at least it looks like the car has a manual transmission unlike the Ertl models with the Pistol Grip inside, and a 727 below.

Trunk

-If they were going to have this poor of execution, I'd have rathered they not make it open! The opening isn't even the right shape

- Wrong jack, and wrong jack placement.

- A spacesaver spare!?!? Even it's not in the right place.

Sure, a lot of what I see could be called "picky", but for $120 list price, I personally expect some quality, and some accuracy. A few minutes of research could have seriously helped this model.
