One BIG opinion thread

Thought I would ask all my questions now in this thread and get everyone's opinions at once instead of posting 3 or 4 topics.

Looking for opinions and pics on what looks best as far as painted bumpers versus factory chrome bumpers on 71-72 B's. I'm not a big chrome guy, but both chrome and painted bumpers looks good on our cars...just can't make up my mind. The car is going back to the factory GY3 color.

Next thing is on carbs (Not the food  ). My car original came with a holley. I'm looking for pros/cons to each of these carbs when it comes to driveability and performance.

1.) Stock Holley carb
2.) Carter Thermoquad
3.) Carter AFB Competition 750
4.) Barry Grant 750

The last thing I'm going to ask about is the stock 14" Road Wheels (Magnums). Does anyone still run these wheels and what do you think of them? I'm worried that if I put 14's back on my car, it's going to look like a big goofy car with little wheels on it.

Any and all opinions are appreciated

I really like body colored bumpers and had them on my 71 Charger. Elastomerics are even better.

A new Holley with an electric choke would be my first carb choice. Unless you're turning 500hp, a dual feed, single pump will work. I like the 80508.

If you like Mag-500's, they can now be had in 15".

I don't like the painted bumper look. It looks hackish. But i do like the Elastomeric bumpers. I'd stick with the holly carbs. Never had a problem with them. Years ago i got a Thermoquad Rebuilt it and it was total crap. The wheels are your personal choice.

One of the reasons I was attracted to these cars in the first place was the painted bumpers. They finish the lines of the car. However, some colors look better chrome.

A lot of people think the Edlebrock carbs are crap. I dont know why. Others tell me they are exactly the same as Carter AVS carbs which some people love. Chevy vs Ford; Carter vs Holley thing?

I wouldn't put 14's on my car. 15" Magnum 500's for me

Most of my experience is with edelbrock and never worked with holleys. Most of the time I hear about holleys, its that they don't want to stay tuned for too long. My old man preaches about how much he loves the T-quad and how there is nothing like the secondaries on those carbs.

If I could find some elastometric bumpers, I would gladly put them on.

As for the wheels, the 14" mags are what came stock on my car. I agree with most of you guys that 15's would probably look better. I've even eyeballed those 18" mags that wheel vintique or stockton wheel started making.

I love the painted bumpers...maybe take a picture of your car and use a edit program and 'paint' the bumpers to see how they look, or find an on-line image of your color combo.

I haven't screwed with a carb in over 17 years, so I can't speak to that...I will say that there are as many opinions as there are brands.

As for wheels, 15X8 Super Coupe wheels are my preference. May sound silly, but I have also been a fan of the old Centerline wheels like these Image

I have always thought that the cars that are painted brighter colors look better with painted bumpers.

Reminds me of a friend of mine years ago. Who had a metallic blue '70 hemicuda. He bought a set of rubber bumpers for the car. His wife told him that if he put those on the car, she'd divorce him! As she liked the chrome bumpers on the car better. So he sold the rubber bumpers. Yes, they're still married. No, he sold the car years ago. :^( It's a matter of personal taste. I used to like the painted elasometric bumpers better in the old days. But since the car manufactures got rid of chrome bumpers years ago. I sort of like the looks of chrome bumpers better now. As they look classier having all that chrome on them. But then being 63 years old now. Might have something to do with my tastes.
Thermobog carbs are great when they're new. But they get old from heat real quick, and generally have warping problems with the plastic bowl.
14" wheels on our cars look like bicycle wheels under a fat lady. Unless you go to the trouble to get some some custom ones made that range from 8 to 10" wide. So you can get some wide rubber under the car.

It really depends on color for the bumpers..Mine is B5 and the chome looks fantastic and I wouldnt cae for them painted....If purple or orange then its a different story..

14 inch wheels look way too small on these cars even with fat rubber...No less than 15s and no bigger than 17s IMO....

I had a 72 400 4 spped car with a stock Thermoquad and it ran fantastic..There was a pro racer that won an NHRA event with a TQ.. This one is tuff as a real carb guy could tune most anything..Ive had good luck with TQ's and Eddy carbs so far..

My car is going to be painted back to curious yellow. So here are some examples of one RR with painted bumpers and the other with chrome bumpers.

They both look good! Some guys paint their bumpers because it's cheaper than having them chrome plated. But once you get a chip in the paint. It'll stick out like a sore thumb. Chrome is a harder finish than paint.

Holly carb
15 inch Rallye Wheels
Chrome bumpers imho, although the elastometric are nice.
