Fiberglass repairs: i.e. Bondo!

Wanted to start a discussion to garner insights on Bondo. That love it or hate it temporary fix for late model cars.
I find it funny that I've actually seen entire fiberglass fenders and bulge hoods for the 73's and 74's and a lot of people want to get their car lighter. Three thousand pounds is a bit heavy.
And given that there are very little aftermarket repops of sheet metal for the 4th gens, why is there such a backlash against fiberglass repairs?
It does seem to me to be a cheap and economical way to get your car on the road UNTIL you can actually afford to put the sheet metal in it's place.
Your thoughts?
