so, i've come into a bit of a hold-up. i've talked to some people with 8 track players for sale and they all have one wire per speaker, but a common ground for them - how in the world do these things hook-up? every stereo now has a positive and a negative for each speaker....
thanks

Pretty common for the day, common ground speaker outputs. Maybe a whole whopping 5 watts of noisy power to boot, to drive those 6x9†three ways. Floating ground power amplifier sections came about in the late 70’s early 80’s or so when output power approached 15-20watts. The common ground output is pretty easy to boost with modern day amps however.

so the negative terminals on each speaker connect to the same wire from the stereo? strange

i'm trying to figure it all out, as i'd like the 8 track (hopefully with fm), but i'll probably have to get an external amp, since my exhaust is pretty loud.

We had 'em back then. . .it had to be loud enough to fight over the Cherry Bombs. . . . .and not the Runaways Cherry Bomb, although they were pretty hot, especially Joan Jett. ..
