Well...
Thanks. Believe it or not, that's a factory color, TX9. I'ts definitely a slick color. At one time, I considered getting her painted black with a slightly purple pearl component, so that as it went by, the color would shift to a purple hue. There are these black crow type birds around here whose feathers change colors like that, thats where I got the idea.
I haven't registered the car, and no insurance yet. With the rust starting under the vinyl and in the trunk (and to a lesser extent the floors) I really wanted to stop the damage right where it was and get to fixing it. I haven't really even gone over the car mechanically yet (only had it since May) so once I get all the weatherstrippping replaced, the holes fixed and the new vinyl on, I'll be more comfortable facing our Florida gullywasher thunderstorms. They occur without much warning here, and I couldn't abide the thought of the car gettting wet inside anymore.

ya...that's what i was thinking was maybe somebody had cleared it with a purple tint, but it does look really nice! I know about rust...it sucks...and I'm even starting to get a couple little spots behind the tires from living on a gravel road for a few years...gotta try to fix that somehow...dunno. Ya, I know about the weather, too...i didn't start driving my car after i got it til winter...ya december in Iowa with bad seals really sucks...plus the rain in the spring=mess. Keep on keepin' on...

If it were me, I'd restore that to 100% stock.
I had a '74 with the 400, black on black, red stripe, bucket seats.
Production numbers are not known for the 400's, but it's speculated that there were about as many, if not less 400's than there were 440 GTX's. This is because, in 73/74, you were going to pay a premium on the insurance to have the big block, why not get the GTX?
I sold mine in 1992 for $1,000....so I could buy a 'dependable' car, a '93 Dodge Shadow ES.
If that's the original engine/trans in there.....I'd seriously put it back to factory.
Either way, nice find!

I know, but...
Well, if I ever do put a 440 in it, I'll certainly keep the 400 nestled away.
It's funny you mentioned the color of your old car, because if I had decided to lose the vinyl for good, black with red stripes was where I was headed. There's a picture of a car with that combo with turbine wheels online somewhere. I thought it looked mean so I made it my wallpaper for quite a while. I also considered putting black stripes on, sorta like the Impala SS's stealth emblems. Would that have made me an outcast?? lol
So, tell me, does it hurt to think of what you sold your old one for? I Sold my last one in 93 for even less. Not one day goes by without thinking about it. It's a mistake I won't make again. I only picked this one up a couple months ago, so I've gone 13 years Moparless. Already told the family they'll be burying me in the driver's seat of this one. Got a big plot picked out already!

Nice car! I would definitely hold on to this one. I bought my 71 for $1200 in 1996. I sold it to my younger brother for $1000 in 2000, and less than a month later I bought it back from him for $1500. I just couldn't bring myself to part with it. The best part was, he didn't do anything to it in the time he had it. I just offered him more money so that I knew he couldn't say no.

Re: I know, but...
I think about and regret my decision to sell that car all the time! Once I found out how rare they were, I went and found a correct date engine and trans for it to replace the 383 that was in there at the time....that went with the car too.aerodynamic wrote:Well, if I ever do put a 440 in it, I'll certainly keep the 400 nestled away.

A new front suspension system and electronic ignition set up would of made the car an excellent daily driver.....okay, not with today's gas prices, but back then.

The only other car like mine that I saw was at Carlisle a long time ago....also a 400 and also black-on-black with the red stripes.....but their car was a console car with buckets and mine was a column-shift auto but with buckets. I took a ton of pictures of it for reference which was a good thing because I haven't seen it again up there.
As for your stripes, the black stripe would be a cool way to go....maybe go with a black reflective so it shines at night.
